Now that the Tony Awards have come and gone, some shows are wrapping up their Broadway runs, but there are many more in the works for the upcoming season. Lots of plays with impressive casts are scheduled to open in the latter half of 2014.

Tickets to shows are often less expensive during the weeks prior to the official opening night, while the show is in previews.  One of the best sources for deals on previews tickets is the PlayBill Club. This Is Our Youth is a comedy by Kenneth Lonergan. It’s a 1980’s “lost generation” tale of growing up in Manhattan.  The show stars Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, and Tavi Bevinson. It’s scheduled to begin preview performances at the Cort Theatre on August 18th.  Ticket prices range from $35 – $135. You Can’t Take it With You, a revival of a Pulitzer Prize winning play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, will star James Earl Jones, Kristine Nielson, Rose Byrne, Annaleigh Ashford, Mark Linn-Baker, and Reg Rogers. The show is directed by Scott Ellis. You Can’t Take it With You is scheduled to open for previews at the Longacre Theatre on August 26, 2014.  Ticket prices range from $37 to $152 and are on sale now. It’s Only a Play. This one has lots of stars in the cast, including Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullaly, F. Murray Abraham, Rupert Grint, and Stockard Channing. The play is written by Terrence McNally and directed by Jack O’Brian. It’s a comedy about a playwright’s anxious opening night experience.  The show is playing a limited 18 week engagement at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Preview performances begin August 28th. Opening night is October 9th. Tickets for preview performances start at $72.

 

The Country House. This Manhattan Theatre Club production is the world premiere of a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Morgulies. The show is directed by Daniel Sullivan and stars Blythe Danner.  “The Country House” is a comedy about a very dramatic family gathered at their Berskshires summerhouse.  Previews begin September 9th.  Theatermania.com has a promo code for discount tickets for select seats at performances through 11/23/14 (except 10/02/14).

 

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time begins it’s Broadway run this fall at the Barrymore Theatre.  Based on Mark Haddon’s bestselling novel by the same name.  Simon Stephens is the playwright and Marianne Elliott directs. The show has enjoyed a very successful run in London, winning seven 2013 Olivier Awards, including the award for Best New Play.  Tickets are on sale now for performances beginning September 10, 2014.  There are rear mezzanine section seats available for $27, but prices go up quickly from there, with most in the $89 to $129 range. Love Letters – A revival of A.R. Gurney’s play in the form of letters exchanged between two characters engaged in a long-term romance. The show consists of two seated actors reading the letters. A rotating line-up of actors are scheduled to appear in the play, including Alan Alda, Candice Bergen, Mia Farrow, Brian Dennehy, Carol Burnett, Stacy Keach, Diana Rigg, Anjelica Huston, and Martin Sheen.  Performances begin September 13th at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

 

On The Town, a rival of a classic musical with music by Leonard Bernstein and book and lyrics by Betty Camden and Adolph Green, is scheduled to open for preview performances on September 20, 2014.  The show will play at the Lyric Theatre. Cast includes Tony Yazback, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Clyde Alves, Alysha Umphress, Megan Fairchild, and Elizabeth Stanley.  Tickets are on sale now and range from $37.50 to $147.50. Disgraced.  This play by Ayad Akhtar won the 2013 Pulitzer Price for Drama after playing off-Broadway at the Lincoln Center Theater.  The play centers around a dinner party hosted by a successful Pakistani-American layer. Things get out of control as discussion of religion and identity get heated.  The cast includes Hari Shillion, Gretchen Mol, Karen Pittman, and Josh Radnor. Previews begin at the Lyceum Theatre September 27th. The Last Ship.  This is the much anticipated new musical by Sting.  The story revolves around the residents of the English seaside shipbuilding town of Wallsend. It opens for previews at the Neil Simon Theatre on September 30th. The Real ThingThe Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of The Real Thing is scheduled to open for preview performances on October 2, 2014 at American Airlines Theatre. The play was written by Tom Stoppard and will be directed by Sam Gold. Stars include Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Cynthia Nixon. Ticket prices range from $67 – $137.  NewYork.com has discount tickets available.

 

The Elephant Man, starring Bradley Cooper, Patricia Clarkson, and Alessandro Nivola will play a limited 13 week engagement at the Booth Theatre.  Preview performances are scheduled to begin October 18th.  Tickets go on sale to the general public on June 28th. Ticket price ranges are $99 – $169.

 

A Delicate Balance.  This Edward Albee play (which won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama) has a cast that includes Glenn Close, John Lithgow, Martha Plimpton, Bob Balabn, Clare Higgins, and Lindsay Duncan. The show is scheduled to begin previews at the John Golden Theatre on October 20th. Tickets are on sale now and range from $60 – $155.  BroadwayBox.com has a promo code for discount tickets.

 

Side Show. This is a new production of a show that previously had a limited Broadway run. This musical about the lives of conjoined twins and vaudeville performers Daisy and Violet Hilton has been reworked and did well during out-of-town tryouts. The show begins preview performances at the St. James Theatre on October 28th. Opening night is November 17th.

 

The River. The setting is a moonless night at a remote cabin. The playwright is Jez Butterworth and the cast includes Hugh Jackman, Laura Connely, and Cush Jumbo.  The show will play at the Circle in the Square Theatre and previews begin October 31st.

 

Honeymoon in Vegas is a new musical scheduled to begin preview performances at the Nederlander Theatre on November 18, 2014.  The show stars Tony Danza, Rob McClure, and Brynn O’Malley.  Book by Andrew Bergman, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, Choreography by Denis Jones, and Gary Griffin directs.  No announcement yet as to when tickets will go on sale.
