If you’re in New York City on one of the first three Saturdays in August, be sure to check out all the fun events happening at Summer Streets.  Since seven miles of streets in the heart of Manhattan will be closed to traffic for the event, it’ll be kind of hard to miss!  Summer Streets 2014 happens on August 2, 9, and 16 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

So what is Summer Streets? Well, it’s about biking, walking, and enjoying healthy recreation, and having fun.  It’s a chance to get out there and see what it’s like to be on traffic-free streets in the middle of the city.

The Summer Streets route extends from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Lafayette Street and Park Avenue (up to E. 72nd Street).  Route map.

There are five “rest stops” along the route where activities and events are scheduled.  Rest stop activities include  a zipline (at the Foley Square Rest Stop), a “mini-golf experience”,  a special installation called “Dive” in the Park Avenue Tunnel, a 25-foot tall climbing wall, fitness classes, a variety of stage performances, art exhibits, educational exhibits, workshops and demonstrations, free bike rentals and bike-riding classes, walking tours, parkour demonstrations, and more.

All the activities at Summer Streets are free of charge.
