When the phrase “best value” is applied to New York City hotels, it can mean a lot of things, but it rarely means that the hotel is going to be inexpensive, at least not by the standards of most areas outside of New York City.  However, if you want to make your travel budget stretch as far as possible, you’ll want to find the hotels that are at least relatively inexpensive and that give you the best value for your money.

When you look at TripAdvisor’s list of “best value” hotels in NYC, they include hotels that charge $400 – $500 a night. Makes us wonder what their criteria is. But if you dig around a little in that list there are some hotels that do look like good deals, by NYC standards anyway.

Here are three hotels that get good reviews, have good locations, and have room rates that are lower than average.

The Chelsea Pines Inn:  Listed rates for August are around $270 a night, maybe because they’re advertising a summer sale. It get’s great reviews.  The location is good. On 14th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, it’s just a block and a half from Union Square Park.

Wyndham New Yorker Hotel: This one’s a “bargain” at around $250 a night.  It’s located near Penn Station, which is convenient if you’re arriving by train.  Macy’s is a block away.

NYLO New York City:  Another hotel with rates well below the $300 mark. The NYLO New York City is located on the Upper West Side.  A good location for visiting Central Park, the Museum of Natural History, and Lincoln Center.
