THE IMPROVISATORE: A NOVEL OF ITALY
BOOK TALK ON HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN WITH FRANK HUGUS
TUE—SEPTEMBER 18—7 PM, free
Published to great acclaim in 1835, Hans Christian Andersen’s debut novel, The Improvisatore, initially eclipsed his fairy tales, which first appeared in the same year. This first English translation since the 1840s, by Frank Hugus, captures the sweep and the nuance that made it one of the author’s most widely read, best loved works. Following the discussion, copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
ÖRÆFI: THE WASTELAND
BOOK TALK WITH ÓFEIGUR SIGURÐSSON

Ófeigur Sigurðsson discusses Öræfi: The Wasteland, a winner of the Icelandic Literature Prize. When an Austrian toponymist returns from a grueling solo expedition on Vatnajökull Glacier, his doctor grows suspicious of his story. But when he attempts to discover the real motives for the treacherous journey, the secrets may be more dangerous than they’re worth. Following the discussion, copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Golnaz Hashemzadeh Bonde joins us to discuss her U.S. debut, What We Owe, with translator Elizabeth Clark Wessel moderating. Years ago, Nahid fled revolutionary Iran with her daughter, leaving her mother and sisters behind. Upon now learning she has just six months left to live, 50-year-old Nahid is hurdled into the deep paradox of the survivor—a relentless instinct to fight against mortality even as she feels she’s living on borrowed time. TALK WITH MAGNUS NILSSON

Acclaimed chef Magnus Nilsson, of the Emmy-winning PBS series The Mind of a Chef and Netflix docuseries Chef’s Table, explores the rich baking tradition of the Nordic region with 450 tempting recipes for home bakers. He joins us to discuss the extensive travels that enabled him to create this comprehensive work. Admission for individuals or groups includes one copy of The Nordic Baking Book signed by Magnus Nilsson.

Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in American is operated by the American-Scandinavian Foundation and serves as a center for educational and cultural outreach programs about Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
The structure houses has a gallery, restaurant, and shop, plus performance spaces, halls, and meeting rooms which hosts a variety of films, concerts, lectures, and other events throughout the year.
Scandinavia House is located at 58 Park Avenue, in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.
