  • Three Nights of Free Outdoor Films at Brookfield Place, July 24 – 26


    Arts Brookfield and Rooftop Films are partnering to present three nights of free outdoor films at Brookfield Place, July 24 – 26.  Kick back and enjoy the free movies along the waterfront at Brookfeild Place in the Financial District (220 Vessey Street between West Street and the Hudson River).

    There’s an Animation Block Part (short films) on July 24th, New York Shorts (short films by New York -based filmmakers) on the 25th, and The Case of the Three-Sided Dream on the 26th.

    Doors open at 6:30 p.m.  There’s live music beginning at 7:30, and the films start at 8:30. The film makers will be present at the screenings and there will be Q&A sessions following the films.

  • Chelsea Art Walk 2014, July 24th


    Head on over Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood on the evening of July 24th (5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) for Chelsea Art Walk 2014. Over a hundred galleries and studios plan to participate in this event that features gallery exhibits, artist talks, receptions and other special events.

    The participating venues are in the area from 16th to 29th Street, between 9th and 11th Avenues.

  • City of Water Day – July 12th


    The City of Water Day Festival is an annual Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance event that features a variety of free activities and boat tours. If you want to take one of the free boat tours, you’ll need to reserve you tickets in advance, so go check out the list of events and tours available at the event website and make you plans today.

  • Manhattanhenge 2014 – July 12th


    There are two days each year when the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan’s street grid. This has become known as Manhattanhenge, after the pre-historic Stonhenge rock formation that aligns with the sun for the summer solstice.

    The Manhattanhenge dates for 2014 are May 29th and July 12th.

    To best observe the phenomenon, go somewhere in the eastern portion of Manhattan and look west across the avenues toward New Jersey.

  • New Music in Bryant Park – Fridays July 11 – August 8


    Hear new music commissioned by Chamber Music America performed by award-winning classical and jazz ensembles. July 11, 18 & 25 and August 1 & 8.

    The concerts are 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the Upper Terrace Steps in Bryant Park. Each concert includes performances by two groups. See the full schedule.

    Bryant Park is located in midtown Manhattan, behind the New York Public Library (between 40th and 42nd Streets & 5th and 6th Avenues).

  • Piano in Bryant Park – Free Summertime Music


    If you find yourself near Bryant Park (between 40th and 42nd Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues) on a weekday afternoon, stop by the Upper Terrace to here some live (and free) piano music.

    The music happens week days from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

    The Upper Terrace is on the NY Public Library end of the park.

  • Today Summer Concert Series (Free)


    The Today Show hosts a series of free outdoor concerts during the summer months. Concerts are held at Rockefeller Plaza, outside Today’s studio at 48th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues.  The on-air performances take place at 8:00 a.m. Some performers play for the audience before the 8:00 a.m. start.  The performances usually end by 9:00 a.m.

    General admission entry for the concerts is usually between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. (it varies by concert). There are also a limited number of fan passes available through a lottery. A fan pass lets you get into the concert viewing area before the general public. Visit the Today Concert Series FAQ page for info about how to apply for a fan pass.

  • Lincoln Center Out of Doors – Three Weeks of Free Entertainment


    Lincoln Center is hosting three weeks of free music, dance, and spoken word performances, July 20 – August 10th. Everything is held outdoors at Lincoln Center’s outdoor plazas and the Damrosch Park Bandshell.  Performances include dance from around the world, globalFEST concerts, Americanafest NYC concerts, and family events.

    All performances are free.

  • Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show in NYC

    fireworks-2You’ve probably seen NYC’s Fourth of July fireworks display on television. If you’re planning on being in the city on the 4th, you can see them in person.

    The 2017 fireworks show will launch from five barges in the East River, positioned between East 24th and East 41st Streets. You’ll be able to see the fireworks from any location with a view of the sky above the East River. There are several official viewing points along the elevated portions of FDR Drive. Also, take a look at Time Out’s guide to fireworks viewing spots.

    The display starts at 9:25 p.m. but you’ll want to find your spot to watch long before that. The fireworks bring out lots and lots of people to watch.

    If you’d rather stay home and avoid the crowds, you can watch the show on TV. NBC will air the festivities beginning at 8:00 p.m.

  • Broadway in Bryant Park – Free Concerts


    Enjoy free concert performances by the casts of Broadway shows Thursday afternoons, July 10th – August 14th. The Broadway in Bryant Park concerts last an hour and are held from 12:30 to 1:30 on the lawn at Bryant Park.
