    The Brooklyn Museum stays open for extended hours (11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.) with free admission after 5:00 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month (except September). .

    The free Saturdays are sponsored by Target.

    Target First Saturdays include special programming such as performances, gallery talks, and hands-on activities.

    There’s a cash bar with Happy Hour pricing from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The museum’s restaurant and cafe also stay open late for the First Saturdays events.

    Regular admission to the museum is on a suggested donation basis. Suggested general admission is $16 for adults and $10 for seniors age 62+ and students with a valid ID.

    The Museum’s Collections

    The Brooklyn Museum is large, with 560,000 square feet of space housing an extensive collection of artwork.

    Highlights of the museum’s holdings include a sizable collection of ancient Egyptian art and an American art collection that includes pieces by Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keefe, Mary Cassatt, and John Singer Sargent. The museum’s European collection includes pieces by Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Latrec, and Claude Monet.

    Free Thursday Evening Admission to the China Institute Gallery

    Admission to the China Institute Gallery is free on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. The regular admission fee for the gallery, located in Lower Manhattan, is $8 for adults, and $4 for Seniors and Students.

  • Night at the Museums. Free Lower Manhattan Museum Admissions

    Free Lower Manhattan Museum Admissions

    Each June, the annual Night at the Museums event provides free admission to museums and cultural sites in Lower Manhattan.

    All the venues are located in Lower Manhattan and within walking distance of each other.

    The 2017 event is June 20th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

    Participating venues for 2017 are the African Burial Grounds National Monument, China Institute, Federal Hall National Memorial, Fraunces Tavern Museum, Museum of American Finance, Museum of Jewish Heritage, National Archives of New York City, National Museum of the American Indian, National September 11 Memorial Museum, 9/11 Tribute Center, NYC Municipal Archives, Poets House, The Skyscraper Museum, and South Street Seaport Museum.

    Lower Manhattan Tours also offers free tours during the event. Advance reservations are required for the tours.

    Several of the participating venues have free admission all the time (African Burial Grounds National Monument, Federal Hall National Monument, NYC Municipal Archives, and National Museum of the American Indian), so if I want to make a day of visiting these Lower Manhattan sites, you could visit those first and leave the ones that normally charge admission for the 4:00 – 8:00 free admission time.

  • The Museum Mile Festival – Free Museum Admission Each Year in June

    The Museum Mile Festival occurs annually in early June.

    During the festival, free admission is offered for participating museums, plus over 20 blocks of Fifth Avenue are closed off to traffic and the streets fill with live bands, entertainment, and art.

    The date for the 2017 Museum Mile Festival is Tuesday, June 13th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

    Participating museums for the 2017 festival are the El Museo del Barrio, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Neue Galerie, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

  • The Rubin Museum of Art Free K2 Friday Nights

    Each Friday night from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the The Rubin opens for free extended hours known as K2 Friday Nights.

    During these evening events, the museum’s Café Serai transforms into the K2 Lounge with DJ music, a 2-for-1 happy hour from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and a special pan-Asian tapas menu.

    The K2 Friday Night events also feature free guided exhibition highlights tours that encourage close observation and conversation.

    Regular admission to the museum is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $10 for students. Children 12 years of age and younger are admitted free.

    Seniors are admitted free on the first Monday of each month.

     

    The Rubin Museum of Art

    The Rubin Museum of Art features art from the Himalayas, India, and neighboring regions and seeks to engage visitors in a way that encourages personal discovery and connection with other cultures.

    The museum has five gallery floors which display permanent collections and special exhibitions.

    The Rubin Museum, which opened in 20014, is a relatively new addition to New York City’s collection of art museums. The museum started with a private collection of Himalayan art held by Donald and Shelley Rubin. The Rubins purchased the former Barneys New York building in 1998 and it was transformed into a modern art gallery space for display of the museum’s collections and traveling exhibitions.

    The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) operates a museum that is open to the public free of charge.

    The museum has three galleries, one that features special exhibitions, one that displays a portion of the museum’s permanent collection, and one for student and faculty exhibitions. Visit the museum website for information about special exhibitions on display.

    The Fashion Institute of Technology is one of the top five fashion schools in the world. The college, which is part of the State University of New York system, offers degrees in art, business, design, and other fields related to the fashion industry.

    Admission to the New York Historical Society Museum and Library is pay-as-you-wish from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Fridays.

    Regular admission is $20 for adults; $15 for seniors, educators, and active military; $12 for students; and $16 for kids ages 5 – 13 (children age 4 and under are admitted free).

    Discount Admission: Groupon has a discounted admission offer available priced at $19.99 for admission for two (half-price), or $29.99 for two adults admission, plus admission for up to three children.

     

    The New York Historical Society Museum and Library

    The New York Historical Society’s museum is the oldest museum in the city.

    The museum features permanent collections and changing exhibitions. Some of the special collections within the museum’s permanent collection of objects include John James Audubon’s preparatory watercolors for The Birds of America, a collection of landscape paintings by artists of the Hudson River School, the extensive folk art collection of Elie Nadelman, and a large collection of Tiffany Lamps.

    An 18-minute film titled New York Story shows throughout the day. The film tells the story of New York City through the years. The last showing of the film usually starts at 4:00 p.m..

    The museum’s Luce Center, which houses much of the permanent collection is undergoing renovations and is expected to reopen in late April of 2017. The renovated area will provide improved display of the permanent collection, including a new Tiffany Gallery to showcase the museum’s Tiffany lamp collection. The renovated Luce Center will also include the new Center for Women’s History, which focuses on the role women have played in American history.

    El Museo del Barrio

    El Museo del Barrio features works by Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Latino, and Latin American artists.

    Admission to the Japan Society Gallery is free of charge from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Fridays.

    A docent tour of the gallery is available Fridays at 7:00 p.m. A Japanese language tour is available Fridays at 6:00 p.m.. Tours last about an hour.

     

    The Japan Society Gallery

    The Japan Society seeks to bring the people of Japan and the United States closer together through the presentation of innovative programs in arts and culture, public policy, business, language, and education.

    The Japan Society’s gallery is one of the top U.S. exhibitors of Japanese art. Exhibitions are displayed in the modestly-sized gallery on a changing basis, representing a wide variety of art forms from the ancient to the contemporary. Visit the Japan Society website for information on the current exhibition.

    The gallery is housed in a building designed by Japanese architect Junzo Yoshimura. In addition to the gallery space, the building contains a small indoor garden, reflecting pool and waterfall, furnishings by George Nakashima, a theater, library, language center, conference facilities, and administrative offices. Films, performances, and talks are regularly scheduled in the theater.
