  • Getting To and From the NYC Airports on a Budget

    Taxi

Taking a taxi from the airport is convenient, but expensive (probably between $30 – $55).

    Shuttle Buses

    GO Airlink NYC
Shuttle buses are a balance between convenience and cost-savings. There are several different shuttles that operate from the NYC airports. There’s not too much difference between their fares, but be sure to check each of their websites to see if they’re offering any special deals. Some at least give you a discount for booking your reservation online.  The main complaint about the shuttles is that they can be very slow at getting you to your destination. It all depends on who else is on the shuttle, where everyone is going, and what the traffic conditions are like.

GO Airlink NYC.  A door-to-door shared ride van service from the JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports to Manhattan. They deliver passengers to their destinations starting with the closest first, so it could take a while to get to your hotel, depending on where it is and where the other passengers on the van need to go. The vans hold 11 passengers. They offer a 10% discount if you book online.

NYC Airporter. These shuttle buses leave the JFK and LaGuardia airports every 20 – 30 minutes. The shuttles have free wifi. They take you to Grand Central Station, Penn Station, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, or Bryant Park. You then have the option of taking one of their complementary shuttles from Bryant Park to a hotel located between 23rd and 63rd street, or taking a cab or other form of transportation to your hotel.

    Public Transit

The least expensive way to go (and maybe the quickest) is to take public transit. You’ll save money, but you’ll have to make some transfers between buses and trains. This option is probably best if you’re traveling light.

Here are details from New York Magazine on how to get to the city from Newark International, JFK and La Guardia.

And here’s public transit connection information from MTA.

Here’s a good thread at TripAdvisor where different options for getting to and from JFK are discussed.

  • Find the Cheapest Airfare Deal with Skyscanner

    Airfare Comparison Made Easy

If you also don’t know about Skyscanner, do yourself a favor and go check it out now.  It’s the easiest and best way we’ve seen to search out good deals on flights to New York City (or anywhere else).

The thing we really like about Skyscanner is that, if you’re flexible about your travel dates (and you should be, if you want really good deals), you can search flights over an entire month’s time.

Tell Skyscanner to check prices over an entire month and they’ll display results in your choice of chart or calendar format showing lowest fares for each day of the month. Want to check the next month out? Just click the arrow next to the month name displayed and you get the next month’s information. The further out you go into the future, the less data is available on the calendar, but for a 30 day period, we found rates listed for most days.

As you can see in the SkyScanner screen capture below, the airfare differences on different departure days can be significant.

    Take a Test Drive

Test out Skyscanner for yourself. Enter your starting point and destination below. Go ahead and enter your preferred travel dates, but once you arrive at the SkyScanner site, you can click on “Show whole month” (top left, below the blue bar) to see prices for other dates.

  • Free Lower Manhattan Transit with the Downtown Connection

The Downtown Alliance provides a free bus service called the Downtown Connection to help you get around Lower Manhattan.

The Downtown Connection travels between South Street Seaport and and Battery Park City, making 38 stops along the way.  You can hop on and off as you please. Seven buses serve the route. Look for the red shuttle-sized buses with the Downtown Connection labeling on the side.

The buses are set up for GPS tracking, so you check online to see where the buses are and when they’ll arrive at a stop. The Downtown Alliance website has directions on how to use your cell phone to check on bus locations.

The bus service runs seven days a week (except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Buses arrive at the stops on about 10 minute intervals during the week and 15 minute intervals on the weekend.

There are many things to do in Lower Manhattan that are either free or inexpensive. You can walk the Brooklyn Bridge, visit the 9/11 Memorial, see the famous Wall Street Bull, explore Battery Park and South Street Seaport, or take the Staten Island Ferry (for views of the Statue of Liberty), all free of charge. A ferry ride to Governors Island costs just $2 for adults, $1 for seniors, and is free for kids under 13, and the official ferry out to visit the Statue of Liberty is just $18 for adults, $14 for seniors and $9 for kids. Combine these activities with the Downtown Connection’s free bus service and you can spend days seeing NYC attractions while spending very little money.

See a map of the Downtown Connection bus route.

  • Three Tools for Finding Lowest Airfares

Finding the best deals on airfare is all about flexibility – yours and theirs. If you can be flexible about your travel dates, you can pick days with the lowest fares. If you need to travel on a specific date, then you’ll want to monitor rate changes to take advantage of shifting prices.

For flexible flyers: If your travel plans aren’t set in stone, Skyscanner has a great tool for finding the cheapest airfares. Go to their site at skyscanner.com  and when you click in the departure and arrival date boxes, look for the buttons below the calendar –  you can check dates over a few days, a week, a month, or even the whole year. The results will be displayed in both chart and calendar view. You may be surprised at what a big difference it makes to shift your travel plans by a day or two.

Tracking changing airfare rates: You would think that the cost of a flight from point A to point B would always be the same, but it isn’t.  Airfare prices flex a lot. They vary by airline, by month, day of the week, and time of flight. Sometimes they change for no apparent reason. In order to find the best deal on airfare, you need a way to keep track of those changes so you can purchase quickly when the prices are good.

Here are two tools that will help you track airline fare changes:

Airfarewatchdog.com – With this simple online tool, all you have to do is enter where you want to fly from and where you want to fly to. Check the little box that says “Send me low fare alerts” and you’ll get an email whenever there are good deals to be had.  They even list promo codes and fares that are only available on the airline websites.

TripAdvisor Cheap Airfare Alerts – To sign up to get alerts, do a search on flights to where you want to go. Don’t worry about the date right now, you can enter anything. Then in the left side margin, under the “refine search” area, there will be a “cheap airfare alerts” heading and a “create alert” button. Click the button, enter your email address, and you’re all set.  You’ll get alerts when flight prices drop.
