  • Find Some of New York City's Quiet Spots

All the hustle and bustle of New York City is great. But if it gets to be a little too much, where do you go to get away from it all?

Gabrien Symons at Business Insider put together a “Top 10” nice piece that identifies some nice places to enjoy a little quiet time (or quieter time, this is NYC after all.)  The waterfall sites look particularly inviting.

Check out the article, and next time you’re in the city, check out a few of these spots for yourself.

  • "TimeOut New York" Subscription for $12

TimeOut New York is an excellent guide to what’s happening in the city.  It’s a weekly publication that features calendars of events for just about everything imaginable. Plus there are articles on events, food and drink, the arts, books, music, film, theater, nightlife, comedy, dance … basically everything happening in New York City. The “This Week in NY” section features highlights for the coming week. Even the ads are interesting.

With this deal from Amazon Local you can get a one year digital subscription for $12, a one year print subscription for $15, or both print and digital for $17.  If you don’t live in the New York area, the digital subscription is the best bet to avoid delivery delays.

See the deal details and make your purchase.

  • Try Scoutmob for Local Savings in NYC

Scoutmob Local features mobile deals and information about local events and things to do.  It’s an app-based system, intended to be used when you’re out and on the go.

You can only use the deals when you’re at the business location that is featuring the deal.  The idea is that when you’re out in the city, you can check Scoutmob for suggestions on where to go.  Then you when you get there, you use the deal via your smartphone. Kinda neat. The deals are good and they don’t cost you anything (no vouchers to buy).

There’s a video on their website that explains how it all works.

    Humans of New York

Yep, it’s available in stock again at Amazon, at least for now. Humans of New York, in case you haven’t heard about it, is the New York Times best-selling book chock-full of photos from Brandon Stanton’s incredibly popular photography blog. Stanton roams the streets of New York, photographing people he meets along the way. He has a knack for getting his subjects to open up and interesting and entertaining things. Each photo is accompanied by a quote from the person photographed. It sounds simple, but the result is a beautiful thing and a lovely tribute to the people of New York City.

     2014 New York City Restaurants

And when you’re planning a trip, guidebooks are very nice. And Lonely Planet makes very good guide books. This one includes neighborhood information, restaurant recommendations, maps (including one you can pull out and take with you), walking tours, and information on all the top sights.

Wanderu’s Search Tool for Buses and Inter-City Trains – This is a cool tool for finding the best deal and most convenient mode of bus travel from Boston or Washington DC to New York City.  You pick the day you want to travel and you’re presented with a list of options that you can sort by departure time, arrival time, travel duration, or price.  It’s just like the airline searches, except for buses. Neat idea. So far, the only routes to NYC are from Boston and DC, but the site developers expect to expand nationwide in the upcoming year.
