  • Photoville – Free Photography Exhibit at Brooklyn Bridge Park

    A Free Photography Festival Housed in a Temporary Village of Shipping Containers

    Photoville returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park for its 6th year September 13th – 17th and 21st – 24th, 2017.

    This annual festival creates an unusual venue for photo exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, and more by creating a temporary village out of over 50 shipping containers placed Brooklyn Bridge Park.

    In addition to the photography exhibits, activities, and events, there is a beer garden and Smorgasburg food vendors.

    Photoville spans two long weekends (Thurs – Sunday) and is open from noon to 10:00 p.m. most days. See the daily schedule.

    The event is free and open to the public.

    Location

    The Photoville container village is set up at Brooklyn Bridge Plaza in Brooklyn Bridge Park. This is the portion of the park that is directly under the span of the Brooklyn Bridge.

    Brooklyn Bridge Park is on the Brooklyn side of the East River. You can get there from Manhattan by subway, bus, or ferry. The NYC Ferry will take you right across the river from Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

    The Brooklyn Museum is hosting a special Georgia O’keefe exhibit, displaying the artist’s wardrobe alongside her paintings and photographs. The exhibit, title Georgia O’Keefe: Living Modern, examines how the artist proclaimed her progressive, independent lifestyle through a self-crafted public persona—including her clothing and the way she posed for the camera.

    The O’Keefe exhibit runs through July 23, 2017.

    Admission to the O’Keefe exhibit is through timed ticket. Regular ticket price is $20 ($12.00 for seniors and students). A specially-priced teen discount is available, with $6.00 admission for those ages 12 – 19.

    Tickets for the Georgia O’Keefe Exhibit are reduced to $12 during Target First Saturdays. The First Saturday date for July is July 1st.

    The Brooklyn Museum stays open for extended hours (11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.) with free admission after 5:00 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month (except September). .

    The free Saturdays are sponsored by Target.

    Target First Saturdays include special programming such as performances, gallery talks, and hands-on activities.

    There’s a cash bar with Happy Hour pricing from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The museum’s restaurant and cafe also stay open late for the First Saturdays events.

    Regular admission to the museum is on a suggested donation basis. Suggested general admission is $16 for adults and $10 for seniors age 62+ and students with a valid ID.

    The Brooklyn Museum is large, with 560,000 square feet of space housing an extensive collection of artwork.

    Highlights of the museum’s holdings include a sizable collection of ancient Egyptian art and an American art collection that includes pieces by Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keefe, Mary Cassatt, and John Singer Sargent. The museum’s European collection includes pieces by Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Latrec, and Claude Monet.

  • Free Weekend IKEA Express Water Taxi

    Free Weekend Ferry from Lower Manhattan to Red Hook, Brooklyn

    It’s free to ride the IKEA Express water taxi from Lower Manhattan to Red Hook, Brooklyn on Saturdays and Sundays. The weekday fare is $5.00 (if you spend $10 or more at IKEA on a weekday, your water taxi ticket is good for a $5 discount on your purchase).

    The ferry runs between Pier 11 near South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan and the IKEA store dock in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

    The ride takes 20 to 30 minutes and you’ll get some nice views of the Lower Manhattan skyline along the way.

    While in Red Hook, you can do some shopping at IKEA (you can carry back on the ferry as much as will fit in an IKEA bag, anything more will have to be shipped), and/or explore the Red Hook neighborhood.

    Author Events at Brooklyn Bridge Park

    Here’s a great way for book fans to spend a summer evening. The Books Beneath the Bridge Series brings authors to Brooklyn Bridge Park for free book events with readings, Q&A, and book signings.

    Books Beneath the Bridge takes place on the Granite Prospect steps at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Enjoy the book readings and enjoy a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the lower Manhattan skyline.

    There are six Monday evening events scheduled each season during the months of July and August, Each event is curated by a local, independent bookstore. Start time is 7:00 p.m.

    2017 Books Beneath the Bridge Schedule:

    • July 10 – Freebird Bookstore – Erica Wagner, author of Chief Engineer, talks about Washington Roebling and the building of the Brooklyn Bridge.
    • July 17 – Powerhouse Arena – Featuring Hannah Tinti and her second novel The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley, and Sarah Gerard with her newest essay collection Sunshine State. Readings, followed by audience Q&A and book signing.
    • July 24 – Greenlight Bookstore – a special summer outdoor edition of our quarterly Greenlight Poetry Salon, hosted and curated by Angel Nafis
    • July 31 – WORD – Lisa Ko will read from her novel The Leavers, which won the 2016 PEN/Bellweather Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. Rakesh Satyal, the Lambda Award-winning author of Blue Boy, who will read from his most recent novel No One Can Pronounce My Name.
    • August 7 – Community Bookstore Park Slope – Jill Eisenstadt reads from Swell, a darkly funny new novel about a New York family, a conversion of faith, and a haunted house in Rockaway.
    • August 14 – Books are Magic – Jenny Zhang, with her first story collection, Sour Heart, and Alissa Nutting with her second novel, Made for Love. 

     

    Location

    The Books Beneath the Bridge events are held at the Granite Prospect steps on Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The steps, constructed with stone salvaged from the reconstruction of the Roosevelt Island Bridge, provide seating with a great view of the river.

  • Old Stone House in Brooklyn

    Brooklyn’s Old Stone House sits on the site of largest battle of the Revolutionary War, where 1,300 Americans were killed or captured.

    The Old Stone House is a reconstruction of the original home which was destroyed in the 1890s.

    Today, the house serves the dual purposes of marking the history of site and serving the neighborhood’s current population. The house contains exhibits about the Battle of Brooklyn (including a diorama model of the battle) and education programs are offered for school children. The house and grounds also serve as a center for various community activities, including art exhibits and music and theater performances.   • New York Distilling Company Tours

    Saturday Tours at The New York Distilling Company[spacer height=”20px”]

    The New York Distilling Company, in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn offers free distillery tours on Saturdays at 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 5:00 p.m..

    On the tour, you’ll get to see how the company produces several different varieties of gin, rye whisky, and a blend of rye whiskey and rock candy sugar called rock & rye.

    After the tour, you can pay a visit to The Shanty, the distillery’s full-service cocktail bar, which features their own spirits as well as a selection of other spirits and beers. It’s connected to the distillery and provides a cozy place to enjoy a beverage.
