SummerStage 2016 – Free Performances in New York City

The SummerStage season of free concerts in New York City extends from May to October. There’s something for everyone, performances are scheduled throughout all five boroughs of the city, and it’s mostly free. The biggest concerts are held in Central Park at Rumsey Playfield.

A few of the big name concerts are ticketed events and the proceeds from these helps pay for all the free shows. 2016 ticketed benefit concerts announced so far include Barenaked Ladies/OMD/Howard Jones and Flight of the Conchords.

For the free events, admission is first-come-first served and closes when the venue’s capacity is reached.

Central Park Ice Festival, February 13, 2016

Witness ice-carving artists from Okamoto Studio use electric chain saws, chisels, and picks to transform more than 6,000 pounds of ice into a glistening replica of one of the Park’s most iconic statues. As night falls, the Mall becomes a silent disco with colorful lights and live DJs. Details at the Central Park Conservancy website.

Free Concerts at Central Park’s Harlem Meer

Visit the north end of Central Park for the Harlem Meer Performance Festival’s series of free concerts. These concerts are held on an outdoor stage at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, inside the park between Lenox and Fifth Avenues. Concerts are Sunday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Here’s a Google Map showing the location of the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center and Harlem Meer.

Free Public Art Exhibit in Central Park’s North End

In celebration of Central Park’s 35th Anniversary, non-profit organization CreativeTime and the Central Park Conservancy present “Drifting in Daylight: Art in Central Park.”

Billed as a “springtime pathway of art,” the project is an exhibit of eight site-specific “performative, participatory, and perceptual” artworks throughout the north end of the park.

The exhibit opens May 15th and continues Fridays and Saturdays, noon to 6:00 p.m. through June 20, 2015.

The artworks, as described on the CreativeTime website, sound innovative and entertaining. There’s solar-powered ice-cream that captures the colors of Central Park sunset, mobile performances, a postbox for sending messages to those who have no earthbound address, recreation of classic Central Park movie scenes, and the S.S. Hangover sets sail in Harlem Meer.

Download the free Official Central Park app for iPhone or Android. The app includes a GPS enable map to help you find your way around the park. Harlem Meer Performance Festival

Enjoy free music at Central Park’s Harlem Meer each Saturday, June 15 – August 31st. The concerts are 2:00 – 4:00 and feature some of the best local talent in jazz, Latin, world, and gospel music.

The concerts are held lakeside on the plaza of the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center in Central Park’s north end (110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues).

Official Central Park Tours

The Central Park Conservancy has announced they now have an expanded selection of expert-guided tours of Central Park. These tours are guided by Central Park Conservancy guides, and the ticket fees help support the care and maintenance of the park.

There is a wide variety of tours available, including Welcome tours and “Premiere” tours such as the Ramble tour, North Woods tour, Seneca Village tour, Iconic Views of Central Park tour, Belvedere’s Kingdom tour, Heart of the Park tour, Art of the Park tour, and more. Space is limited on the Premiere tours, so advance registration is required.

The Welcome tours are conducted free of charge. The fee for the Premier tours is $15.00. Central Park Conservancy members can purchase discounted tickets for $10.00.

Take a Free Guided Tour of Central Park's North End

Central Park is big. Really big. And sometimes visitors don’t get all the way to the northernmost portions, which is too bad because there are plenty of neat things to see up there.

The Central Park Conservancy offers free guided “Northern Welcome” tours. You’ll see highlights of the northern portion of the park, including the Conservatory Garden along Harlem Meer and the North Woods.
