  • National Museum of the American Indian NYC

    The George Gustav Hey Center at the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House is one of three National Museum of the American Indian facilities in the U.S. (the others are the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC and the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, MD).

    The museum is operated by the Smithsonian Institution and is dedicated to sharing the art and culture of the natives peoples of the Americas.

    A mix of permanent and changing exhibits are on display. The permanent “Infinity of Nations: Art and History in the Collections of the National Museum of the American Indian” exhibit displays hundreds of works by Natives on North, Central, and South America.     The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, with extended hours on Thursdays to 8:00 p.m (expect Thanksgiving Day, when hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) The museum is closed on December 25th.

    Bowling Green, where the museum is located, is a park in the heart of the financial district. It’s the oldest public park in New York City. The Alexander Hamilton Customs House is located at the southern end of the green and the Charging Bull statue is located at the northern end.

  • Discount Admission to Hall of Science Gingerbread Lane


    Each year chef Jon Lovitch makes a huge display of gingerbread structures for the New York Hall of Science (located in Queens). The 2015 display cover 500 square feet and includes 1,050 houses and structures, including a double-decker carousel.

    Admission to Gingerbread Lane is included with regular admission to the New York Hall of Science.

    On January 1oth, the gingerbread houses are all given away on a first-come, first-served basis during the Gingerbread Lane House Giveaway.

    To control the number of people in the exhibits at any one time, entrance is handled through a timed entry ticket system.

    Ticket-holders are assigned a specific time at which they can enter the exhibit.  Regularly-priced adult tickets purchased through the Discovery Times Square website are $32.12, including fees and taxes.

  • 2015 Museum Mile Festival – Free Museum Admissions June 9th

    The annual Museum Mile Festival happens Tuesday June 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  During that time there will be free admission to all the museums along the mile.  The museums include The Africa Center, El Museo Del Barrio, Museum of the City of New York, The Jewish Museum, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, National Academy Museum and School, Guggenheim Museum, Neue Galerie New York,  and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

    In addition to the free museum access, Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th Streets will be closed to traffic and live bands, entertainment, and art will fill the streets.

    Groupon just came out with a great deal on admission to the Intrepid Museum. For just $29, you can get general admission to the music, plus admission to the Space Shuttle Pavilion, an audio tour, and one simulator ride.

    The offer is good for admission any day in June.  Normally, general admission tickets are $24, general admission with Space Shuttle Pavilion is $31, and simulator rides are $9 each.

    The Intrepid Museum is a retired US Naval Aircraft Carrier converted into an innovative music complex.  Just the opportunity to be on an aircraft carrier is pretty special, but there’s a lot more to see, including a collection of aircraft (the Concorde!), a submarine (that you can go on), and the Space Shuttle Enterprise.  Learn more about the Intrepid Museum.

    The museum will close at 5:45 and then reopen at 6:45 for the concert. Admission for the concert is $10 for standing room on the ramps.
