  • Free Summergarden Concerts at MOMA Sculpture Garden

    The Museum of Modern Art’s Summergarden Series

    Each summer, the Museum of Modern Art hosts a free music series in the museum’s sculpture garden.

    The Museum of Modern Art’s 2017 Summergarden concert series takes place on Sundays, July 9 – July 30. The concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. and seating is on a first-come basis. The gate opens at 7:00 p.m..

    Entrance for the concerts is through the Sculpture Garden gate on West 54th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues.

    Food and drink are available for sale at the Garden Bar, which has handmade snacks, wine, beer, and specialty cocktails.

    The museum’s exhibition galleries are closed during Summergarden.

  • Free Concerts: Lowdown Hudson Music Festival

    Lowdown Hudson Music Fest

    Each year, Arts Brookfield presents the Lowdown Hudson Music Fest, a free summer music festival at Brookfield Place. The event takes place over two days, with concerts held on the Brookfield Place waterfront plaza.

    The event is free to attend. Admission is on a first come, first served basis.

    Dates for the 2017 event are Tuesday, July 18th and Wednesday, July 19th.

    Brookfield place has lots of places where you can get something to eat, and terrace and waterfront plaza bars sell beer and wine.

     

    2017 Performers

    The 2017 Headliner for Tuesday, July 18th is award-winning rapper, actor, producer, and poet Common. Flint Eastwood opens the Wednesday, July 19th show and OK GO is the main act.

    For both performances, doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the show starts at 6:00 p.m..

  • Metropolitan Opera Summer Recitals in the Parks

    The Metropolitan Opera’s Free Summer Recitals Series

     

    The Metropolitan Opera hosts a series of free opera concerts in NYC park each summer in June.

    Concerts are held in all five boroughs.

    The concerts feature performances by the Opera’s young rising stars, who perform a selection of opera arias and duets.

    The Central Park concert usually starts the season with a performance at the park’s Rumsey Playfield.

    The concerts are free and open to the public.

  • Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center

    For a reasonably-priced and fun night out of dancing to live music, try the Midsummer Night Swing events at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park.

    The 2017 dates are Tuesdays – Saturdays, June 27th through July 15th. The style of music and dance varies each night. There is a group dance lesson at the beginning of the evening.

    The dance floor opens at 6:00 p.m., the group dance lesson is 6:30 to 7:15, and live music sets are usually 7:30 – 8:30 and 9:00 – 10:00.

    Dance floor tickets are $17 per person when purchased in advance or $20 on the day of the event.

    There’s a barbeque stand available for food and beer, wine, champagne, soda, and water are also available for purchase.

    Note: Bags and purses are not allowed on the dance floor. It’s best to leave them at home, although there is a $3 bag check available.

  • Summerstage – Free Performances in all Five Boroughs

    SummerStage

    SummerStage is an annual festival of (mostly) free performances spread out across all five boroughs. The events run from May to September, but most are scheduled in June, July, and August.

    Most SummerStage evens are free. Each year, however, a few of the concerts by big-name acts are ticketed events. Those are usually held at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. The funds from the ticketed events help support all the free events held throughout the festival.

    For the free events, admission is first-come-first served and closes when the venue’s capacity is reached.

    SummerStage 2017 includes 150 music, dance, and comedy acts at 15 parks throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

  • New York Philharmonic Free Fridays

    Free Tickets for Ages 13 to 26

    The New York Philharmonic has a special Free Fridays offer for those 13 to 26 years of age.

    100 free tickets are given out for each Friday evening subscription performance. The tickets are reserved online on a first-come-first-served basis. One ticket per person.

    If you’re lucky enough to get one of the 100 reservation spots, you’ll need to pick up your ticket between 5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. at the David Geffen Hall box office on the day of the performance.

  • Pop-Up Concerts at Columbia University

    Free Concerts with On-Stage Seating

    Columbia University’s Pop-Up Concerts allow the audience to get up close with on-stage seating.

    The Pop-Up Concerts are free events held at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre. Audience seating is on the stage with the performers. In keeping with the unusual setting, the music is often innovative or experimental.

    The concerts are held on select Tuesday evenings. The performances usually start at 6:00 p.m, but sometimes they start later. Be sure to check the schedule.

    Admission is free and on a first-come-first-served basis. Doors open a half hour before the scheduled concert time.

  • Mid-Day Music at Columbia

    Free Mid-Day Concerts at Columbia University

    Columbia University presents a program of free noontime musical performances at the university’s Faculty House building. The concerts feature Columbia University students and music associates. Most are solo instrumentalist recitals, but there are sometimes duos or small ensembles scheduled.

    There are performances scheduled for most Wednesdays January – April and October – early December.

    Mid-Day Music @ Columbia events are free and open to the public.

    Faculty House is an on-campus event space housed in a brick and limestone building originally constructed in 1923. Garden Room 1, where the Mid-Day Music concerts are held, is on the first floor.

  • Attend Free Events at the Lincoln Center Atrium

    MusicFree Performances

    Lincoln Center hosts free performances at their David Rubenstein Atrium (located on Broadway between 62nd and 63rd Streets). There are usually several free events each week. The free performances feature a variety acts, from local artists to national and international touring performers. Most events are music concerts, but dance, theater, and spoken word events are also often on the calendar.

    The popular Free Thursdays concerts are held each Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

    Visitor Information, Discount Tickets, and Cafe

    The David Rubenstein Atrium serves as Lincoln Center’s public space and visitor center. In addition to being the site for free weekly performances, this is where you’ll find a Lincoln Center information desk, Lincoln Center tours information, and a discount tickets box office that sells same-week performance tickets 25% to 50% off.

    The Atrium is also a good place to just stop in and relax. It’s a nice space with vertical gardens and fountains, plus there’s a Wichcraft Cafe, free wifi, and public restrooms.

     

    Hours and Location

    Atrium hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

    The Atrium is located on Broadway, between  62nd and 63rd Streets. There are entrances on 62nd Street, Columbus Avenue, and Broadway.
