  • Dance Parade and Festival

    The annual NYC Dance Parade & Festival takes place in May of each year.

    The 2017 event will be held on Saturday, May 20th.

    The parade, which features dance groups, floats, live bands, and DJs, starts a 1:00 p.m. and proceeds down Broadway from 21st Street to Tompkins Square Park at Avenue A and Saint Marks Place.  The parade line-up is ordered chronologically, from ancient to contemporary dance.

    Following the parade, there’s a festival in Tompkins Square Park, with multiple stages of entertainment and free dance lessons.

    The festival’s mission is to inspire dance through the celebration of diversity.

    The Annual New York City Easter Parade

    NYC’s Easter Parade is a tradition that dates back to the 1870s. According to Widipedia, the Easter Parade drew over a million people during its peak of popularity in the 1940s and 50sThe Easter Parade may not be as popular as it once was, but lots of people still head out to 5th Avenue wearing their best Easter bonnets on Easter day.

    New York’s Easter Parade was featured on the big screen in the 1948 movie, Easter Parade, starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade ….

    The Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival, as it’s called today, is a rather informal affair. There’s no pre-parade line-up or marching order. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Dressing up in your Easter best is encouraged. Some participants will be seen wearing more traditional finery, while others wear elaborate costumes of all types. And, of course, there are the hats – the very elaborate, sometimes beautiful and often comical, hats.

    The Easter Parade is held on Easter Sunday on Fifth Avenue, from 49th Street to 57th Street from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..

  • Tartan Day Parade

    The New York Tartan Day Parade

    New York’s Tartan Day Parade is a celebration of Scottish heritage. The parade is a festive event with lots of marchers and pipe bands decked out in traditional Scottish tartans.

    The 2017 Tartan Day Parade is Saturday, April 8th. The parade starts at 2:00 p.m..

    The parade route begins at West 45th Street and 6th Avenue and continues up 6th Avenue to 55th Street.

     

    Tartan Day

    April 6th was officially established as National Tartan Day by the U.S. Senate in 1997. The date commemorates the 1320 signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, which asserted Scotland’s sovereignty over English territorial claims.   • Greek Independence Day Parade

    The 2017 Greek Independence Day Parade in New York City is Sunday, March 26th. The parade starts at 1:45 p.m, beginning at Fifth Avenue and 64th Street and ending at Fifth Avenue and 79th Street.

    The event is organized by The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York and marks the Greek Declaration of Independence with a celebration of Hellenic culture and traditions.

    The New York City Greek Independence Day Parade has been happening since 1938.

    The parade goes on rain or shine.

  • NYC Lunar New Year Parade

     

    Chinese New Year Parade

    The annual Chinese Lunar New Year Parade brings lion and dragon dancers, floats, costumed performers, and lots of confetti to the streets of Chinatown.

    The 2017 New York Lunar New Year Parade happens on Sunday, February 5th. The parade starts at 1:00 p.m..

     

    Parade Route

    According to a map provided at the Better Chinatown website, the 2017 parade starts at the intersection of Mott Street and Hester Street, then proceeds down Mott, turning at Bowery,proceeding along Division Street, then running up Eldridge to Hester, where is continues one block east and turns to run north along Forsythe Street to the end of the route around the intersection of Forsythe and Grand Street.     Festival in Sara D Roosevelt Park

    A festival featuring foods, vendors, and festivities takes place in Sara Roosevelt Park after the parade.

  • El Museo del Barrio’s Three Kings Day Parade

    Celebrate the 12th Day of Christmas and NYC’s Latino community at the annual Three Kings Day Parade. On January 6th of each year, El Museo del Barrio hosts this community parade, which is lead by giant Three King puppets and features lively music, elaborate costumes, floats, camels, and costumed students.

    Three Kings Day marks the end of the twelve days of Christmas and commemorates the story of the Three Wise Kings who followed the Star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the infant Jesus. Three Kings Day is a religious holiday in Spanish-speaking countries such as Spain, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.  El Museo del Barrio’s celebrates the tradition of Three Kings Day with this annual event.

    The parade starts at 11:00 a.m. and winds through the streets of East Harlem, beginning at 106th Street and Lexington Avenue and ending at 115th Street and Park Avenue.

    Following the parade there’s La Marqueta with traditional Puerto Rican music and food, and there’s music at the El Museo del Barrio, where Las Galerias are open free of charge from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

  • 2016 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade – March 17

    New York City puts on some great parades and the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the big ones. If you’re in the city on March 17, 2016, make plans to attend.

    The parade route starts on 5th Avenue at 44th Street and proceeds up 5th Avenue to to 79th Street.  Starting time is 11:00 a.m.

  • 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC

    One of the great free forms of entertainment in New York City is to attend one of the city’s many parade. The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade is one of the big ones.
    St. Patrick’s day is March 17th and the parade starts at 11:00 a.m. at 44th Street. It continues up Fifth Avenue up to 79th Street. The parade finishes around 4:30 – 5:00 p.m.

    There are no floats are automobile in this parade, just lots of marching units (150,000 – 250,000 marchers!) and bands.

  • Chinese New Year in New York City – 2014

    chinese-new-yearChinese New Year is January 31, 2014.  Here are some ways to celebrate the Year of the Horse in New York City.

    There will be Chinese New Years events on Friday, January 31st at Roosevelt Park, between Grand and Hester Streets.  There will be a firecracker ceremony and an afternoon of traditional and contemporary cultural performances. 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Dance troupes will also parade through the main streets of Chinatown.

    There will be a free Dragon Dance performance by Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and National Dance Institute on February 1st from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on the Lincoln Center Josie Robertson Plaza.

    The 15th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade & Festival takes place on Sunday, February 2nd. The parade begins at the intersection of Mott and Hester Streets and progresses along East Broadway, and up Eldridge to Forsyth.
