Belvedere Castle in Central Park. Photo by Captain-tucker (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0], via Wikimedia CommonsClimb to the top of Belvedere Castle for some great views of Central Park and the surrounding city.
Belvedere Castle isn’t really a castle, but rather a small ornate structure built to add to the Central Park scenery.
The castle was constructed in 1865 and is an example of what was known in the Victorian era as a “folly”, meaning a structure intended to provide views and a picturesque backdrop but without any use as a building. These days the castle has another purpose in addition to sitting up on the hillside and looking great; Belvedere now serves as a Central Park visitor center and gift shop. It’s one of the places where you can pick up a free copy of the official Central Park map.
Belvedere Castle is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
Location
Belvedere Castle is located in Central Park, mid-park, near the 79th Street Transverse.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Museum of Natural History are nearby on the east the west sides of the park, so if you’re visiting either of those, a visit to Belvedere Castle is a fairly short walk.
NYC’s Easter Parade is a tradition that dates back to the 1870s. According to Widipedia, the Easter Parade drew over a million people during its peak of popularity in the 1940s and 50sThe Easter Parade may not be as popular as it once was, but lots of people still head out to 5th Avenue wearing their best Easter bonnets on Easter day.
New York’s Easter Parade was featured on the big screen in the 1948 movie, Easter Parade, starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade ….
The Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival, as it’s called today, is a rather informal affair. There’s no pre-parade line-up or marching order. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Dressing up in your Easter best is encouraged. Some participants will be seen wearing more traditional finery, while others wear elaborate costumes of all types. And, of course, there are the hats – the very elaborate, sometimes beautiful and often comical, hats.
The Easter Parade is held on Easter Sunday on Fifth Avenue, from 49th Street to 57th Street from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..

The Rubin Museum of Art
The Rubin Museum of Art features art from the Himalayas, India, and neighboring regions and seeks to engage visitors in a way that encourages personal discovery and connection with other cultures.
The museum has five gallery floors which display permanent collections and special exhibitions.
The Rubin Museum, which opened in 20014, is a relatively new addition to New York City’s collection of art museums. The Rubins purchased the former Barneys New York building in 1998 and it was transformed into a modern art gallery space for display of the museum’s collections and traveling exhibitions.
New York’s Tartan Day Parade is a celebration of Scottish heritage. The parade is a festive event with lots of marchers and pipe bands decked out in traditional Scottish tartans.
The 2017 Tartan Day Parade is Saturday, April 8th. The parade starts at 2:00 p.m..
The parade route begins at West 45th Street and 6th Avenue and continues up 6th Avenue to 55th Street.

Bryant Park, in cooperation with the New York Audubon Society, offers spring and fall birding tours of Bryant Park. The tour dates are scheduled to coincide with the spring and fall bird migrations, when you’re most likely to see unusual birds who might stop in the city during their trips north of south.
Bryant Park’s spring tours are in April and May and fall tours take place in September and October. See the Bird Tours section of the Bryant park website for a Birding Tours Schedule.
The birding tours are free and open to the public.
Bryant Park might not be the first of New York City’s parks you would think of for bird watching. Central Park is the better known spot for New York City birding. Central Park’s enormous size and variety of landscape does provide some of the best habitat for birds in the city. All that space can be a little intimidating, though. It’s hard to know where to start to look. Although Bryant Park isn’t likely to attract the variety of birds found at the larger park, the compact size makes spotting what is there more manageable.
Even with its smaller size, Bryant Park does get a nice variety of birds during the migration seasons. According to NYC Audubon’s web page about Bryant Park, 121 different species of birds have been spotted in the Bryant Park, including 32 species of warblers (tiny and often colorful woodland birds most frequently seen during migrations). That’s pretty impressive for such a small patch of land in the middle of the city.
