  • Free New York Philharmonic Concerts in Central Park

    violinThe New York Philharmonic will play two free 2014 summer concerts in Central Park

    July 11, 2014 – Alan Gilbert conducts a program of Strauss, Smetana, and Tchaikovsky.  Concert on the Great Lawn begins at 8:00 p.m.  Westside entrances: West 81st Street or 86th Street at Central Park West.  Eastside entrances: East 79th Street or 85th Street at Fifth Avenue.

    July 14, 2014 – Alan Gilbert conducts.  Featuring Joshua Bell on violin.  Pieces by Nielsen, Bruch, Grieg, and Liszt.  Concert on the Great Lawn. Westside entrances: West 81st Street or 86th Street at Central Park West.  Eastside entrances: East 79th Street or 85th Street at Fifth Avenue.

    The Philharmonic also performs summer concerts at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Cunningham Park in Queens, and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.  See the complete schedule.

     

  • July 16 & 17 Lowdown Hudson Blues Festival – Free


    The Lowdown Hudson Blues Festival is a free outdoor blues concert event held in Lower Manhattan at the Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza.  There will be two days of music, July 16th and 17th, 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

    Although the festival is free, you’ll need tickets to get into the seating area. Free tickets will be distributed at the Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place, two per person, beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the day of the show.  There will also be a standing room section that doesn’t require tickets, but space is limited.

    Download the free Official Central Park app for iPhone or Android. The app includes a GPS enable map to help you find your way around the park.   • Harlem Meer Performance Festival

    Harlem MeersEnjoy free music at Central Park’s Harlem Meer each Saturday, June 15 – August 31st.  The concerts are 2:00 – 4:00 and feature some of the best local talent in jazz, Latin, world, and gospel music.

    The concerts are held lakeside on the plaza of the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center in Central Park’s north end (110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues).

  • 4 Knots Festival – Free Music at South Street Seaport


    This event hosted by The Village Voice features two stages of free music July 12, 2014 from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. at South Street Seaport.

    This year’s bands include Dinosaur Jr, Mac DeMarco, Those Darlins, Speedy Ortiz, Viet Cong, Nude Beach, Juan Wauters, Re-Tros, and Dead Stars.

  • Night at the Museums. Free Admission to Lower Manhattan Museums June 24th.


    As part of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s River to River Festival, 14 Lower Manhattan museums and cultural institutions will be open free-of-charge on June 24th, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

  • Museum Mile Festival – Free Museum Admissions – June 10, 2014


    The annual Museum Mile Festival happens Tuesday June 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  During that time there will be free admission to all the museums along the mile.  The museums include The Africa Center, El Museo Del Barrio, Museum of the City of New York, The Jewish Museum, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, National Academy Museum and School, Guggenheim Museum, Neue Galerie New York,  and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

    In addition to the free museum access, Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th Streets will be closed to traffic and live bands, entertainment, and art will fill the streets.

  • Free Movies and Music at South Street Seaport

    If you’re looking for some free entertainment in Lower Manhattan, check out the line-up of free films and concerts on South Street Seaport’s Front/Row stage.

    Front Row Outdoor Cinema shows free films at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. They even provide lawn chair seating and popcorn.

    South Street Seaport also hosts free concerts and DJ entertainment throughout the summer.

    South Street Seaport is a historic district in Lower Manhattan located along the East River, south of the Financial District.  Shopping and entertainment center around Pier 17.

     

     

  • Metropolitan Opera 2014 Free Summer Recital Series


    Each summer the Metropolitan Opera does a series of free recital concerts in parks throughout New York City. Each performance features three singers from the opera and a pianist.

  • Free Shakespeare in Bryant Park


    See The Drilling Company’s production of “Hamlet” free in Bryant Park through the end of May (New York Times review of the production). The performances at Bryant Park are on Thursdays – Saturdays at 7:00 p.m.

    The Drilling Company regularly performs in the city parking lot at the corner of Ludlow and Broome Streets. 2014 Parking Lot productions (in the parking lot, not at Bryant Park) will include “Twelfth Night” from July 10th – 26th and “Othello” from July 31st – August 16th.
