  • 2018 Lincoln Center Out of Doors Starts July 24th with Three Weeks of Free Events

    Lincoln Center’s free summer festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, kicks off tomorrow, July 24th.

    The festival features three weeks of free music, dance, film and spoken word. Events are held at the plazas surrounding Lincoln Center and at the Center’s Damrosch Park outdoor stage.

    Some of the highlights of this year’s festival include performances by Mavis Staples & Joe Henry, Margo Price & Lukas Nelson, Sun Ra Arkestra, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Peter Wolf, and NPR Music’s Turning the Tables Live.

    Events are free and admission is on a first-come-first-served basis. Gates for most performances open one hour before the event.

    Broadway Concerts in Bryant Park

    Each summer, cast members from current Broadway shows take to the stage for this free series of concerts held on Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The stage is set up on the Bryant Park lawn. It’s a great way to enjoy highlights from current shows and to enjoy a visit to Bryant Park.

    Several different musicals are featured each week, providing a taste of what’s a currently running on and off Broadway.

    Country singer-songwriters Margo Price and Lukas Nelson (Willie’s son) will perform a free concert at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.. The concert is part of Americanafest NYC/Lincoln Center Out of Doors.

    Seating is first-come-first-served, and gates open one hour before the 7:00 p.m. performance.

  • Free 5 Seconds of Summer Today Show Concert June 22

    5 Seconds of Summer – Today Citi Concert Series – June 22, 2018

     

    5 Seconds of Summer are performing for the Today Show’s Citi Concert Series Friday, June 22, 2018. The concert is part of the morning show broadcast.

    The Today concerts are held at the Today Show Plaza at Rockefeller Center. The plaza is on 48th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues.


    Admission is free and on a first-come-first-served basis. The concerts are very popular and the Today Show Plaza fills up fast on mornings when there’s a concert (usually Fridays). The show suggests that people arrive by 5:00 a.m. to get a good spot. Performances usually run from 8:00 to 9:00 a..m.

    A limited number of Fan Passes are distributed via a digital lottery system.

  • Free Central Park Tours by Central Park Conservancy

    A great way to learn about Central Park is to take one of the tours offered by the folks responsible for maintaining the park, the Central Park Conservancy.

    The Conservancy offers both paid and free tours. We’re going to focus on the free tours here, but the paid tours, priced at just $15, are also a good deal and you can find out all about them at the Conservancy’s website.

    Free Central Park Conservancy Tours:

    Southern Welcome Tour – Introductory tour to the southern portion of the park. Highlights include Grand Army Plaza, Chess & Checkers House, Wollman Rink, Gapstow Bridge, Dairy Visitor Center and Gift Shop, The Pond. No registration required

    Heart of the Park Tour – This tour takes you straight through the heart of the park. Space is limited, so registration is suggested.

    East Side Evening Stroll – This tour starts at 6:00 p.m. and covers the area from the southeast corner of the Park to Bethesda Terrace. No registration required.

    Discovery Walks for Families – Special, kid-friendly tour for families with kids age 5 +. Space is limited and registration is required.

  • Free Summer Films in Bryant Park

    Free Outdoor Movies at Bryant Park

    Each summer, Bryant Park hosts a series of free outdoor films. The films are shown on Monday evenings June – August.

    Come out to the park and grab a spot on the lawn. The lawn opens for seating at 5:00 p.m and the films begin at sunset, which is usually between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m..

    Each year around Memorial Day, US Navy ships dock at New York City’s harbors and the streets of the city fill with thousands of visiting Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen.

    New York City’s annual Fleet Week is held in celebration of the sea services and features ship visitations and special military performances, demonstrations, and events throughout the week.

    The dates for the 2018 NYC Fleet Week are May 23 – 29.

     

    Fleet Week Events

    Check the Fleet Week website for a schedule of activities and events, including free performances by military bands and drill teams. The Fleet Week Facebook page is also good source of information.

    The visiting ships are open for free tours throughout the week. Ships dock in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. A list of visiting ships is provided at the Fleet Week website.

    The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum hosts special events during Fleet Week, including Military demonstrations, special displays, and entertainment. Activities on the ship require an admission fee (all U.S. active military and veterans receive free admission). Events on the pier are free and open to the public.
