  • 20 at 20, 2014: September 9th – 28th

20 at 20 is an annual Off-Broadway promotion that features $20 tickets available at the theater box offices 20 minutes before curtain time.   And to keep with the “20” theme, the promotion runs for 20 days, September 9th – 28th, 2014.

Ticket availability varies by show and by date. It’s a bit of a gamble to show up 20 minutes ahead of curtain time and hope for a $20 ticket, but that’s part of the fun. You might want to have a back-up plan and another show nearby in case your first pick is sold-out.

There’s a one ticket per person limit, so everyone going to the show needs to wait in the line and buy their ticket.  It’s possible that you won’t be able to get tickets sitting next to each other.

See a list of participating shows.

And here’s a FAQ about how 20@20 works.

  • Cool Tool: Today Tix App

So let’s say you’re in New York City and you decide you’d like to go see a Broadway (or off-Broadway) show, but you don’t have tickets, you don’t want to pay full-price at the box office, and you’d rather not wait in line at the TKTS booth.  No problem, the Today Tix app on your smartphone can help you with that.

Today Tix is a free app (iPhone and Anroid) that lets you buy last-minute tickets to shows at discount prices. You can use the app to browse what’s available at what prices and then make your purchase.  Shows are only listed for about a week in advance, so this is more a tool for last-minute purchases than long-range planning.

Most of the Today Tix tickets are sold with what they call Congierge Delivery. That means they’ll get the tickets for you (or notify you by email if they can’t fulfill your request) and deliver the tickets to you, in-person, outside the theater, beginning 30 minutes prior to curtain. There’s a $5.00 surcharge added to the ticket purchase for this.

It’s a pretty nifty service.  You could probably do better on ticket prices if you’re willing to find promo codes and go to the theater box office or wait in the TKTS or rush ticket lines (see our tips for getting the best deals on Broadway shows) but TodayTix is a very convenient option for purchasing discounted theater tickets.

Save a little extra by entering referral code LAINQ when you place your first ticket order, it’s good for $20 off.

Visit the Today Tix website for more information on how everything works.
